Manjra Krishi Vigyan Kendra Farmers, Sugarcane Cooperatives and NABARD extends support to AgSri for improving sugarcane cultivation in the Latur District of Maharashtra State in India
Sugarcane farmers and Manjara Krishi Vigyan Kendra from the District of Latur in the State of Maharashtra in India have been doing pioneering work in SSI implementation. The huge interest in the SSI methods was generated following extensive media advocacy and awareness trainings on SSI in 2009 and 2010 by the ICRISAT-WWF Project in collaboration with Agrowon, a popular agriculture daily in Maharashtra. On invitation from Manjara KVK and SSI farmers Dr. Biksham Gujja, Chairman and Founder AgSri, and former Team Leader of the ICRISAT-WWF Project, and his team visited Manjara KVK SSI farm plots and SSI farmers’ field on March 31st .
During his interaction with farmers and the KVK scientists Dr.Biksham Gujja emphasised the need for high sugar belt region such as Latur district in Maharashtra to adopt SSI technology which will contribute to less inputs of fertilizers, seeds and water and will improve the net income of the farmers while reducing the negative ecological impact.
On 1st April 2011, Manjara KVK Latur organized a “Workshop on Scaling SSI in the Latur District of Maharashtra”. The workshop was attended by senior scientist and staff KVK, representatives from sugarcane cooperatives and private mills, NABARD officials, progressive farmers, state agricultural officers, AgSri team and representatives from Media.
The member participants extended their support to AgSri for SSI implementation beginning year 2011.
The team also met the District Collector Latur and the Latur Agriculture University Dean and visited the sugarcane research labs of the Agri-Buisness School, Latur.
